Former KCCA FC and Uganda Cranes captain, Ibrahim Ibs Sekagya, has ascended to a coaching role in the senior team at MLS side New York Red Bulls FC.

Sekagya, who previously captained Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg, brings his wealth of experience as he takes on the position of coaching assistant alongside Sandro Schwarz, Volkan Bulut, and Vedad Ibisevic.

The promotion stems from Sekagya’s commendable work with the second-string side, New York Red Bulls II. Despite his elevation, he will continue to oversee the development of young talents in charge of the junior side, where Ugandan players Kasule Ibrahim Jr and Ssebuufu Frank showcase their skills.

Sekagya’s interim coaching stint in the senior side in July 2022 left a lasting impression on the club’s leadership, ultimately leading to his promotion. Effective February 2nd, 2024, the Major League Soccer club officially announced the technical changes.

A product of the KAYOFA project, Sekagya’s football journey includes playing for Equatorial FC, State House FC, KCCA FC, Uganda U-17, U-20, U-23, and the Cranes. His overseas career took him to Argentina (Ferro Carril Oeste, Atletico de Rafaela, Arsenal di Serandi), Austria (Red Bull Salzburg), and the United States of America (New York Red Bulls).

Having debuted for the Uganda Cranes as a teenager in 1996, Sekagya went on to captain the national team until his retirement in February 2012. His notable achievements include being part of the U-23 squad that reached the All Africa Games semi-finals in South Africa (1999).
